AMAZONAS

The graphic novel Amazonas – Fortellinger langs elvebredden is not an educational or geographical textbook, but a travel adventure set against the backdrop of climate issues. It chronicles cartoonist Leo Ribeiro’s personal journey aboard the riverboat Comandante Souza II through the Amazon rainforest, blending his experiences with stories shared by people he met along the way. Simultaneously, the novel explores Ribeiro’s own process of adjusting to life in his new home in Stavanger, Norway. Readers are introduced to a vivid cast of characters, including a hunter, a clown, a captain, a mate, and an Indigenous chief, whom Ribeiro encountered during a month-long journey from Manaus to Porto Velho. While each story stands alone, together they form a cohesive narrative. This is not a work of documentary or reportage but rather a piece of autofiction inspired by real people and events. Any resemblance to reality is intentional.

The novel also features an introductory essay by Torkjell Leira, a social geographer, capoeira trainer, and author. Leira has lived, studied, and worked in Brazil for many years and has written extensively on Brazil and the Amazon. His latest book, The Art of Killing a Democracy: The Story of Bolsonaro’s Brazil, was shortlisted for the NTNU Literature Prize in 2024.
